Could your headaches come from your neck?
Tension headaches are the most common type, a band-like pressure or tightness around the head, closely linked to stress, posture and long hours at a screen or desk. Migraines are different, often a one-sided, throbbing pain with nausea and sensitivity to light and sound, usually following a recognisable pattern.
The upper neck joints and surrounding muscles connect directly to the areas of the head where headache pain is felt. Poor posture, desk work, long drives and repetitive trades work load these structures over time. In many cases the neck is the source of headaches people assumed were stress-related, a pattern called a cervicogenic headache.
A proper examination is the only way to know what’s driving your headaches. Dr Marcello will identify whether there’s a mechanical cause that chiropractic can address, or whether another approach or referral is more appropriate.
Signs your neck may be involved
- Headache starting at the base of the skull
- Pain spreading toward the forehead or eyes
- Worse with neck movement or held positions
- Neck stiffness or reduced range of movement
- Temporary relief from stretching the neck
- Headaches that tend to be one-sided
How chiropractic care can help
What to expect at your first visit
Your first appointment starts with a conversation about your headache history, how often they occur, how long they last, what triggers them and what you’ve already tried, followed by a physical and orthopaedic examination of your neck and upper back.
Dr Marcello explains what he finds in plain language and what he thinks is driving your headaches. Any treatment is gentle and won’t surprise you. New patients pay $78 for a full consultation and assessment (normally $140).
Every care plan is tailored to you. By addressing areas of spinal and nervous system stress, chiropractic care aims to support your body’s natural ability to function, move and feel its best. If you have any questions, we’re always happy to talk through whether care is right for you.
Common questions.
Can a chiropractor help with headaches?
Yes, in many cases, particularly headaches with a mechanical cause linked to the joints and muscles of the neck. If your headaches are cervicogenic or tension-related, spinal treatment may reduce their frequency and intensity. Dr Marcello will tell you honestly whether it’s likely to help.
Can a chiropractor help with migraines?
Research suggests chiropractic care may help reduce migraine frequency and severity for some patients, particularly those whose migraines have a cervical component. Results vary from person to person, and reducing neck tension can be one useful part of managing them.
How many sessions before I notice a difference?
It varies with how long you’ve had headaches and what’s causing them. Some people notice improvement after two or three visits, others take longer. After your assessment Dr Marcello will give you a realistic indication before reassessing.
Is chiropractic care safe for headaches?
Yes, it’s well tolerated by most patients. Some feel mild neck soreness after an adjustment that settles within a day. Gentler options like Activator or soft tissue work are available if you prefer a low-force approach.
Will you adjust my neck?
Neck adjustments are one option, not a given. Dr Marcello assesses first and discusses treatment with you. If you’re not comfortable with a cervical adjustment, he’ll use a different approach.
Should I stop my headache medication when I start care?
No, never stop or change medication without speaking to your GP first, that decision belongs with your doctor. Many people find they need medication less often as their headaches improve, and your GP can guide any changes safely.
